Brand New Officer Guide

So you just got elected to one of the four core officer positions for next year, now what! There are a number of things that you can do to right now, hopefully you are reading this right after the election in the spring.

Each officer has a few specific tasks that they are responsible for, but beyond that you are all equals.  You will all have an equal share of the work, an equal amount of responsibility, and an equal say.  Because the greatest kind of leadership is by example, here are a few guidelines that you should all follow:

-Workouts are the foundation of this club, and all officers should be committed to the workout schedule appropriate to which group they are in.  You should all be a visible presence at a majority of the workouts, and should generally have a pretty positive attitude about the workouts.

-You need to control the flow of communication.  This means that if you have anything bad to say about any members, policies, leadership decisions, sponsors, workouts, races, coaches, etc. then that should stay within the officers.  Any good things that happen should be made widely available public knowledge immediately.  Bad news only goes up, good news goes everywhere.

-Be united.  If you have any disagreements, which you will, keep them among yourselves and work to find a compromise.  Only when you have a solution or a plan that you can all agree on, or at least accept should you share it with the rest of the club.  And if occasionally there is no way to find a concensus and you have to concede, publicly support the decision that does get made.

President: As the new president, the first thing that you will want to do is have a meeting with all of your new officers.  In this first meeting, you will set expectations, establish roles, and start the process of uniting your visions.  This club can be whatever the four officers decide that it will be, as long as you are all working towards the same goal.  If you all believe in the same vision, and it is really easy to get the rest of the club excited about it and working towards accomplishing something truly great.  I would challenge you to use the systems that have previously been put in place to make club business run smoothly, but don't limit your goals or your visions based on past success.  Anything that this club has done in the past is just a foundation for you to build on.
