Hey there.  I'm going to start riding my bike to school (~12mi. round trip) and was wondering if there is any advice you all could share with me about things to make sure to have/bring/do when commuting by bike.  I'd rather not have to learn the hard way, so any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Thats about the length of my

Thats about the length of my bike commute. Make sure you have a rain jacket and lights. A giant backpack us also helpful. Also, it is worth investigating the best way to get to campus (unless it is obvious) and coming up with a few alternate routes.

i dont' commute to school

i dont' commute to school but I'm guessing having some near bulletproof tires would help.  maybe look into tire liners or some of that flat prevention goo.

I personally love my back

I personally love my back baskets on my bike.  Yes, they make my bike weigh 20 pounds, but I can fit my backpack in them.  that way I don't hunch over with a lot of weight on my back and I dont' come to school with sweaty strap marks on my shirt.  Also they are great for groceries.

I commute a few times a week

I commute a few times a week at 20mi each way.

  • head light--leave it on so if you're running late you don't think about ditching them.
  • tail light. I attach mine to my bike so I don't forget it.
  • a good, big backpack.  I've heard a commuter/messenger bag is better, but haven't tried it.
  • with a backpack, a more upright position than on your race bike is important.
  • bulletproof tires.  I use Slime tubes and kevlar liners in the tires.  I also use tires with some tread (cyclocross tires).
  • find a good route where you're not battling traffic, even if it's 15 mintues out of your way.
  • Have fun!

I <3 this backpack. I bought

I <3 this backpack. I bought it after doing a bunch of research about the best bags for commuting.

http://www.ebags.com/osprey/circuit/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=107...

It is light. Has tons of interior space. A laptop pocket (b/c I commute with my laptop) and it is made from recycled soda bottles!!!!

Messenger bags are nice for some people but not such a good idea if you have shoulder or back problems because they don't distribute the weight equally.
