How much protein do you need during a Half-Ironman?
Soma
Casey, it's a simple math problem...
Between 7:1 and 10:1 (Carb: Protein) measured in grams. Do this on the bike; only carbs on the run.
Total calories: 200-250/hr +/- depending on body weight and testing you've done in training.
Also,
Water: 20-24 oz/hr +/- depending on body weight and testing you've done in training.
Electrolytes: 100-500 mg sodium/hr depending on body weight, testing in trainig, heat and humidity. Testing is the big one here. And complement the sodium with the full electrolyte spectrum (not just salt).
The easy answer is this:
1.5-2 scoops Hammer's Sustained Energy per hour in a water bottle. Add in 2-3 Endurolyte capsules if it's over 80 degrees and/or humid. One water bottle of clear water per hour.
Thanks Coach. Math is not my best subject. Would accelerade work too? If you don't have protein, will it really hurt during the race? I just haven't trained with anything with protein, but I would be willing to try stuff so I can have some protein during the race.
You've been training long, so go with what you're used to. It is best to have PRO during the race, but not necesary, and I'd recommend not doing something new on a race that long. Accelerade is OK, but can cause bloating and/or cottonmouth from the sugar content.
i messed around with this nutrition thing over the summer getting ready for the half. i went back and forth on whether or not i liked sustained energy. i ended up using it during the race and felt fine with it.
since school has started i've been using sustained energy consistently on my long rides and always feel good using it. its not the greatest tasting, but i've heard rumor that you can put some gatorade or heed powder in there to flavor it. i typically do 2 scoops per hour. also, i usually throw in an extra scoop or so just in case i start feeling hungry during the bike and end up need more calories (or just because i can handle more calories). the important thing for me is that i also feel good and recovered the next day when i do my long run, bit of biking, and swimming (of course this is also related to sleeping, eating, etc--recovering correctly). good enough evidence for me to stick with sustained energy for long distance stuff.
