Post a few lines about your race or your volunteer experience here (especially for those of you that did your first race/sprint or experienced your first triathlon as a volunteer).

Had a good warm-up starting an hour before the race.  Went for a 15min. run with some faster pickups.  Stretched and then came to hang out at the race.  Closer to race time I got in the dive tank and swam about 400yds or so.  This is the first time I felt like I actually got a good warm-up in.

Swim:  felt strong and for once was not totally trashed after the swim.  the hardest part was probably trying to climb out (12:51)!  T1 was fairly quick.

Bike:  Jumped on the bike (well, stopped and clipped in like a lame-o).  Used the first half a lap or so to get my legs going and then tried to push harder gears.  Was passing people the entire time.  Only Suter passed me (no surprise...good job man) on the bike.  Just kept hammering and trying to get faster or maintain my speed on each lap (32:48).

Run:  T2 was quick.  Kept a really high foot turn over the entire race.  I think this helped me deal with the harder effort I put in to the bike portion.  Was working hard and passing people.  Got a side cramp half way through the second lap or so and slowed down quite a bit to stretch out my diaphragm so I could breath.  Sorted that out and sped back up.  Picked it up more heading back onto cherry.  Commented to myself how painful that race was after i finished (20:55).

Time:  Unofficially, 1:06:35  A PR by about 4:45 or so.

Coolest part, regarding myself:  I placed third in my AG (didn't realize it though and wasn't there to get the award...Thanks Lee!), which was my first time ever to get an AG award!!  I'm freakin' pumped!!!

Congrats to everyone who was out there racing or cheering us on...tricats dominate again!

I was so excited to

I was so excited to volunteer, but my house got broken into last night!  I was up until my alarm went off to get up to volunteer, which was at 4:30 am.  I did pass the race as I was leaving my friend's house and I saw someone on Campbell near the tennis courts in a TriCats suit on their bike and I cheered really loud from my car!  Good job TriCats!

Learned some things today. -

Learned some things today.

- Don't drink both nights prior to the race, regardless of people telling you it is good carb loading.

- Try to warm up a little bit, especially when you are at the race venue with 4 hours to spare.

- Know when and where your swim wave starts.  While stretching over by the diving pool, I hear, "Wave 9 will start in 20 seconds."  I guess you could say I warmed up by running on the pool deck to my lane.  "5,4...put my swim cap on...3,2...goggles...1, BEEEP!  And in I go, right in time...

- Finally, learn how to flying leap, or better yet, how to clip into pedals.  Sometimes, it can be very hard...

Good race everyone

Congratulations Matt (and

Congratulations Matt (and everyone else who placed)!

This was a great race for me, although it didn't feel like it at first. My time was 1:18:46 (my watch, official 1:18 something - a PR). I warmed up in the (former?) diving pool when the wave before mine started, and then did a warm-up lap in the main pool when my lane was clear.

Swim: The other guy in my lane was fast, so I felt like I was going slower than I wanted even though I was putting in a fair effort. Turns out I did slightly better than, but right around, what I estimated (16:12 by my watch for 825 and I estimated 16 for 800). T1 was ok, ~1:44 by my watch.

Bike: Clipped in and headed off. Like Matt I passed a fair number of people (of course I don't know what wave/lap they were all from/on) and didn't get passed by anyone. I almost got hit by a car on speedway, they were trying to turn right and the officer didn't notice them (I think they were chatting with a motorcycle cop who had stopped there) until the car was well into the bike lane (they were turning slowly so were able to stop). According to my bike computer my ride was 34:52 (I didn't lap my watch until after I started the run). T2 felt ok, a little trouble getting my socks and run shoes on (new shoes and I haven't put speed-laces in them yet). Don't have my T2 time.

Run: Felt hard, but I was able to get into a good pace about halfway through my 1st lap on the mall. About 3/4 into the run someone coached on a guy who was passing me (I think he's the only person who passed me on the run) and I kinda listened to what he said and tried to pick it up a little too (not enough to keep up with the guy who passed me though).

It was great to see everyone who was there, and to hear people cheering me on during the race. Thanks to everyone who was cheering us along the course.

Since I am always so amped

Since I am always so amped to race, I really haven't done that much volunteering, and was glad to have the opportunity to give back.  I am pretty sure I also had the coolest job of anyone the entire day.  Jim Stites put me in charge of overseeing the run course and the volunteers on it.

Job Description: Herd around a bunch of Salpointe High School kids that don't care anything about triathlon, aren't sure why they are at U of A at 5 am, and are quickly realizing that they don't care as much about extra credit as they thought they did.

Also included in this job: carry a walkie talkie (apparently the sole purpose of which was to look official, but was really cool to have because I always knew what was going on), and drive the Gator around (which is surprisingly agile over curbs and other obstacles).

So, after the initial placement of high schoolers around the course, my main job was to watch the race, hang out with other Tricats, and whenever I wanted to see a little bit more of the action on the run course drive around it with a couple of you guys and make sure all of the volunteers were still in the right spots and people knew where they were going.  The Gator was also really handy at getting me to the best viewing locations with a pile of TriCat spectators really quickly, and worked as a mobile cheering platform for several TriCats during the course of the race.  At one point, I happened to be going the same place at the same time as Alex Waters, and because his run speed is very similar to the top speed of the Gator, he had quite a cheering section for a little while.

Near the end of the race Andy and I actually got to be helpful again as we cleared the course after the final racers.  We got to tell the high school kids, who at this point were lying in the grass looking miserable, that it was okay to go home.  Then we broke down the aid station, picked up any signs from the course and headed back to the finish line.

All in all it was a good day.  I got the chance to watch several Tricats have good days on the race course, got to give back a little to the triathlon community, and got to help Jim Stites who helps us with our events.

Well, making the 1600 mile

Well, making the 1600 mile drive (from Montgomery, AL to Tucson) in two days was certainly worth the effort b/c it meant I was able to watch everyone race Sunday morning. It was great to reconnect with the Tricats and with other Tucson triathletes. CONGRATZ to everyone who raced. I hear Alex Waters did decently well. All I can say is that he's lucky I didn't race;-) haha
