Training question

Um so I am gonna try to be a little delicate... I have found that whenever I do a long run in the morning I need to stop to um... "find a facility" if you know what I mean.  Are there any techniques people use to "clean out their system" before training.  So far I have been lucky, but I am worried about getting stuck in the middle of a race.  I heard about drinking coffee but is it good to take in that much caffeine?  Thanks guys!

Coffee does work for some

Coffee does work for some people. I know some people who will drink coffee on race day and they still perform at their best. If you drink it everyday, your body might need it so you can wake up.

Sometimes too much fiber

Sometimes too much fiber will do that to you. Some people eat something with less fiber the meal before the run and then get their fiber in after the run. I've known people who avoid granola, oatmeal and apples as breakfast food, and instead eat something like a non-whole grain bagel.

sadly, it will probably require some experimentation to figure out what works for you. From the stuff I've read previously it seems like it can stem from too much fiber, not enough fiber, too hydrated, not hydrated enough, too much protein, not enough protein etc. One thing to consider is to reduce the amount of dairy in your diet. This seems to be a big trigger for a lot of runners. If it is only happening when you run in the morning it might not be your diet, you might just need to get up a little earlier so your body can "wake up" before you go to the bathroom before running. you might also try keeping a food diary as a way to find out what is triggering it.

Sarah hit the nail on the head...there is no way to hit the nail on the head in one fell swoop.  Experiment and keep a diet log so that when you find something that works, yoiu konw what it was!  Simple sugar is the #1 culprit.  Others are dairy, caffeine, and overall bad diet.

haha. I have experienced the same problem before and talked to a gastrointerologist about it. He said that it is very common for running. He suggested taking a fiber supplement like metamuscil, but only 1/2 of the recommended dose just to keep things regular and then u can kinda try and train your body to "drop the kids off at the pool" first thing when you wake up. It has worked well for me.

I used to be a zero, but now you can multiply that by 100.

2 hours Suter?  Nobody does

2 hours Suter?  Nobody does that.  I would say eat more substatial foods like whole grains instead of enriched wheat.  Overhauling your diet can be super tedious or fun depending on how you look at things.  I wish someone would come up with a beginner meal plan outline with a menu and shopping list that a college student can afford and cook with limited dorm resources.

Or one of the worst possible

Or one of the worst possible experiences ever.  Especially if you're 5 miles away from home.  Well, I imagine it would be.

I thought about this thread

I thought about this thread when I was reading the "running doc"'s blog the other day

http://runningdoctor.runnersworld.com/2008/06/antacids-and-in.html

The short version is that sometimes taking an antacid before running will help deal with stomach upset issues. When you run your body directs blood away from other parts of your body to your legs. That includes your stomach. This can make it difficult for you stomach to deal with acid the way it normally would.
