Allright, so since I've been a horrible triathlete and for various reasons have not yet competed in a triathlon yet, I'm looking into some races over the summer. I was wondering if many people are planning on staying in town for any part of the summer and how many people plan on training over the summer. Also, I found a nice site that I'm sure most of you hip triathletes know of that is helping me find races to consider. Here is the link: http://www.findaraceevent.com/Page2.aspx?region=Arizona&sport=cycling. I figured it might help people like me who aren't full of the triathlon wisdom.
Triathlon Find Site and Summer Training
and don't forget about the weekly aquathlons at Reid Park:
800 yd swim and 5k run
Ill be in homley old kingman for the summer but I def want to keep the training up...Mountain Man in Flag. seems like and awesome race, and we should group up for that!! Little races here and there I might be able to come down for...if we keep each other posted on the events of the summer and training, that would be golden!
Another good source for races: http://www.trifind.com/az.html
You can put in other locations and find good races all over with this site.
Oh, and I'll be here all summer... I'll come up with a way to get sound training plans out there for you guys in the summer. More to come on that.
Adrienne,
I'm also really interested in masters swimming.
Here's the link I found for it:
http://fordaquatics.usswim.net/pages/Masters.htm
I'm down for masters ;) I've done it before, It's definitely an interesting crowd. it would be good to do it with friends lol.
I'm racing the Xterra at Dueces Wild, and possibly a Cali Xterra. gotta get in good mtn biking/trail running shape before xterra collegiate nationals in nov.
Masters (at Ford Aquatics) is pretty fun, great people, atmosphere, and some pretty fast swimmers. The only setback I see is that its an hour concentrated workout. There is no drill, or technique work. Its warm up, main set, and done. They also do an I.M. (Individual Medley, consisting of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle) workout once a week. If people are interested, i can figure out a clinic or something with the other three strokes sometime...
For swimming, I just want to do whatever is going to help me the most for triathlon...not really looking to impress anyone doing butterfly at the rec next fall :). I'm sure this is the case for many other people also.
Is there a good alternative to masters swimming, or would this be a worthwhile addition to a weekly program (thinking several of these workouts a week, and some others as well)? Cost is obviously an issue as well...
Since it appears that I didn't get the internship I wanted, I'll be here all summer. I want to basically live in the water for the summer and do some intense cycling.
I'm pretty sure that I'll have at least one room open in my house too for anyone that has a lease that ends in May and doesn't start again until August. We can keep each other motivated.
Hey, I've got a free room too, available June and July.
As cool as it sounds, a Tricats takeover of masters' swimming might not be the best thing for me, since what I probably need to work on more is skills and drills. Actually I'm not sure what the best thing would be for me: maybe to find a swim coach. Hmm. Anyway, those masters' workouts are intimidating.
In addition to training for Mountain Man and Deuces, I'd like to fit some strength training into the schedule. It would be great to have 1+ training amigos for that, for spotting and encouragement.
Oh, and if anyone wants to study Discrete Math with me, sign up for CSc 245 ... if you have the prerequisites. It's going to be great!
grasky is awesome.
I always knew I liked Tanner.
There's another masters group starting 1 April at La Paloma CC pool. It'll be more instruction as well as stroke work and drills. Geoff form Dolphins of the Desert is starting this one. Contact him for more info 520-883-0151. It's also $10 cheaper per month than Ford--although Ford is great because it's right there at UA.
Dug this thread back up because we were talking about it at the meeting...
In addition to my previous posts on the aquathlons and mountain man, I'm going to be hitting up as many local running races as possible, the next being a 10k this weekend (azroadrunners.org). It will probably be Rylie's first race also (running in the toddler division :). Other local running races can be found at everyoneruns.net, taggrun.com, and bluepantsracing.com.
Going to try to make the Tucson Parks and Rec track meets most Tuesdays over the summer as well. I'm going to be training with some cross country studs from my high school and hoping they wear off on me. Totally open for more people jumping in.
Also planning on the Sahuarita tri (tritucson.com).
I'll probably wait until June at least for masters swimming because of my work schedule.
Yes, I'm going to get faster or kill myself trying...
WILL ANYBODY ELSE BE IN PHOENIX OVER THE SUMMER????
Sean--
I'll be working up there too! ...but I plan to make plenty of training (and hanging out) trips down to Tucson on weekends. Let's train together!
I'd love to keep the same training plan as the rest of you summer people... but up there... then catch y'all on the weekend.
I will be here all summer. I am staying in Tucson and not getting an internship (already done 3 years worth anyhow) for the purposes of training. After all, I only have one shot left at nationals.
I plan on swimming and riding my brains out this summer. I would love to be hitting 200+ miles on the bike (hopefully finding a job that will accomodate that) as well as swimming a minimum of 15k a week (already did some 4-5k workouts and it isn't that much more a time commitment than our 3k workouts since you are already there and all. The running will be what it will be but hopefully 20+ miles. All of this is just random numbers that I like the sound of until I hear a Grasky plan which I will most likely then follow.
I'm right there with you BK. I just kinda made up some very ambitious numbers, but will probably end up following a Grasky generated plan. Tentatively (13:30 bike, 10:30 swim (I'm horrible), 6:00 run).
Christina, we should definitely do some carpooling/rides from the valley down here to T-town. Anyone down for a UA-ASU campus to campus ride?
I'm going to be in Phoenix as well. I'll probably do a masters swimming program. I'm tossing around 3 teams in my head (Rio, SDA, and BEST) and I guess my decision will depend on where I'll work and if anyone else in Phoenix this summer is doing a master's program. ASU to UA sounds like an awesome ride and very hot! Sean and Christina, count me in for training as well.
