What is in the works

Without having regular meetings anymore, sometimes it can be kind of challenging to keep everyone in the loop. So, I decided to take this opportunity to share with all of you what we have been working on, and what we can use your help on. If you are interested in running for any positions in the fall, there are a lot of great ways to get your feet wet, and so I will also note who you will want to contact if you are interested in helping with any of these projects that we have in the works.

We have tentatively scheduled the first big meeting of next year to be on Monday, September 8th. August 25th will be the first day of classes and also the date for the Sport Club Night in the rec center where we will set up a booth and promote TriCats. That will give us two weeks to spread the word about TriCats. Because our first meeting is always way to big for our little conference room, we are thinking about having it on the mall and setting up a PA system. We will have a meeting earlier than this for all returning members. The time and location of this is TBA, but it might involve food. To help: Contact Andy Wyatt.

We are going to have our first social probably two weeks after that. TriSports has offered to host a BBQ/pizza party at their store in which they provide all of the food, and we spend the day doing team building activities between TriSports and TriCats so that everyone can get to know each other and we can build real relationships between our members and our main sponsor. There will also be bike clinics, swim clinics, run clinics, and other various things related to removing the intimidation from triathlon. I expect that a lot of this will be led by returning members. To help: Contact Jessica Boessneck.

Our fall aquathlon is going to be the TriSports.com fall aquathlon and is scheduled for Saturday, September 27th. We really want to get the jump on this one early, so that we can start promotions and publicity early. Probably one of the biggest things that we can do to really increase the number of participants in this race would be for us to participate in the summer aquathlon series and get to know the other athletes that do these races on a regular basis and let them know about ours. To help: Contact Kristine Billings.

We are looking at having our fall training camp on October 4th. One idea is to have it in Rocky Point, Mexico; and incorporate the Rocky Point triathlon on Saturday morning as a part of it. I think that this would be tons of fun, but everyone would have to make sure they have their passports. This could also possibly be one of the qualifiers for Los Gatos. To help: Contact Brian Grasky.

We have started the process of organizing a winter training camp for all seven of the schools in our triathlon conference, the Mountain Collegiate Triathlon Conference. If any of you are curious as to which schools are in our conference, they are UofA, ASU, NAU, CU Boulder, CSU, Air Force Academy, and UNM. This will take place over winter break, and will take a lot of planning between now and then. I think it will be a great way to build a lot of relationships throughout our conference, and make the conference racing season that much more fun. To help: Contact Andy Wyatt.

We are also starting the process of putting together a newsletter. The initial publication will go out to our sponsors, and prospective members to let them know the purpose of TriCats, and how generally bad ass we are. After that, we are hoping to put one out bi-monthly to all parents, sponsors, and donors. We feel like this will help our sponsors understand how much we do, help all of our parents understand what it is that we invest so much of our time and all of their money in, and it probably won't hurt us financially if the donation letter is not the first time that people hear about TriCats. To help: Contact Andy Wyatt.

We have already started working on our gear orders for several T-shirts, nike orders, and our Squadra team uniform orders with the hope that we can make this process as efficient as possible next year, and hopefully get our gear closer to December than March. To help: Contact Andy Wyatt.

We are also working with TriSports to put together a beginner bike package with a pricepoint similar to the one that we got from Bargain Basement, but with Felt bikes rather than Schwinns. They have also offered to do free bike fits (this usually costs $75) for those TriCats that can't quite afford that $600 price tag when they are new to the sport. That way they can buy a clunker that fits them, rather than something that will cause injury. To help: Contact Jessica Boessneck.

Also, we are going to be trying to put together a coalition of good swimmers that can help teach swim form for the first couple of weeks in the fall. To help: Contact Kristine Billings.

You might want to add Alumni

You might want to add Alumni to the groups the newsletter is sent out to, and start getting info from TriCats as they graduate - if the group stays this size or grows more that could be a good fundraising pool as well.

Yeah, that it the one issue

Yeah, that it the one issue with the Rocky Point idea. I have verified that passports are not going to be required until June of 2009. As far as health/safety concerns, we can have a certified trainer with basic supplies come down with us if we want to. Places to stay in Rocky Point can be found pretty cheaply, and with their being a race there that weekend, I feel like other resources might be available as well. If we wanted to organize it so that we rented passenger vans, resort condos, transported bikes, it would come out to about $213 per athlete excluding food. We are looking into how much of that could possible be covered by TriCat funding. If we sent 40 people and paid for the whole thing, it would cost TriCats $8520.53.

The Rocky Point Training

The Rocky Point Training Camp might be pretty intimidating to new members, especially if there is such a large cost (either the new member won't want to pay or might feel guilty about costing the club so much).

Also, I would really miss the camping part of trainig camp if we stayed in condos. Freezing around the fire is amzing bonding time.

The other ideas sound really awesome. I think the BarBQ at Trisports is going to be great.

I think that everyone is

I think that everyone is underestimating the new members.. we won't know their take until they join. Who knows, they might be like me and jump right in :)

I think Rocky Point would be awesome and my mom would definitely come down to serve as team nurse if we weren't camping. But let's see where everyone else stands.

Last semester if training

Last semester if training camp was in Rocky Point I would have been all over it. The additional cost is really not that much when you look at what you get 1) a world class training camp, 2) the beach, 3) authentic dog tacos (jk...but really why are they so cheap?) and 4) Mexico. I hate camping I decided so hotels/condos/houses sounds like a nice change.

Not that I don't think

Not that I don't think training camp in Rocky Point would be fun, but the additional fiscal cost IS a lot more, and could prevent a lot of people from attending. Also, I thought the point of training camp is to have intense workouts and bond with the team -- not to have a vacation. If a group of people are interested in doing the race that weekend and making a mexico trip out of it, then we could possibly hold training camp on a different date so that people can attend both.

I agree with Kiley... I

I agree with Kiley... I like that training camp is a really basic trip, and I also like the mock triathlon idea (like fall camp last year) as opposed to a real (i.e. have to pay for it...) race. I for one am wasted by Sundays of training camp, and would rather rest up before an actual race.

I thought fall training camp last year was awesome: just load your basic camping stuff and training gear and go, with an hour or two to drive (instead of 4+). No border crossing issues or traffic to deal with, good roads, and the list goes on. There are a ton of awesome potential training camp locations in AZ.

All that said, I am definitely up for making it to either the fall or spring Rocky Point triathlon as a vacation-type trip. Too bad they're not scheduled the same weekends as Roger Clyne :(

I'm going to second

I'm going to second Adrienne’s, Kiley’s and Matt's
concerns. I also remember some people not being able to come to training
camp until Saturday, or having to leave early, and that would be more difficult
to accommodate if we go to Rocky Point. While $200+ might be a good deal
for the weekend, when I joined last fall it would have been harder to convince
me to pay that much, and to do a "real" triathlon that weekend,
having been so new to the team and sport - plus the new members will already
feel like they're hemorrhaging money if they bought a new bike. ;-)

As for TriCats footing the bill, it seems like a large
additional undertaking if we also intend on funding A-races - including
Nationals - and maybe adding some expenses via Los Gatos (unless we decide we'd rather put our money into training camps and not funding A-races). Also, that creates another discussion if we have to limit the number who
get to go, or decide who of the people that go get club funding.

However, I also would be up for going to one of the races there separately... it would be an excuse to actually go to Mexico while I'm so close. ;-)

Just my thoughts: Rocky

Just my thoughts: Rocky Point would be really awesome but I agree that it might not be the best choice. I would probably not have gone if the last fall training camp was in Rocy Point. 200 is a good deal for a weekend in Mexico, but that is still 200, which can be like 2 weeks of income for students in addition to all the money required for getting into the sport. Also being in Rocky Point might be distracting to the training environment. If it was in Rocy Point I dont think that as many new members would go becuase triathlon can be intimidating at first and also some new member might not know anyone else on the team, which can be intimidating as well. Maybe it be possible to organize both a low key training camp and the Rocky Point trip for those that want to do the race?

Those ideas sound great.

Those ideas sound great. Rocky Point trianing camp sounds intense. Instead of swim, bike, run, training camp it would more on how much we can drink and eat!!Jk I can't wait for September.

I am gathering that there

I am gathering that there are a lot of people who want to experience the Rocky Point training camp/racing experience, and there are a lot of people who would like a more local, inexpensive training camp/mock race experience. should both be done? Why, or why not? This might be an opportunity to get los gatos to earn their extra benefits.

I heard that Senator Kennedy is in the hospital and am reminded of a quote from his brother. *Ask not what TriCats can do for you, ask what you can do for TriCats.

*slightly modified for mine own benefit.

I am on board for both

I am on board for both trips. Benefits for a local training camp have already been mentioned, but include ease of travel and time commitment, lower expense, etc. I would not have been (willing and) able to go to Rocky Point last fall, and I feel like I dove into TriCats more than most newbies would.

I personally am not convinced that TriCats should try to fund the entire Rocky Point trip, which would presumably have a large component of non-TriCats oriented activities :).

It seems that our resources should be allocated to promote tricats in our conference races (assuming that there are organized conference races...is that the case?).

If conference races are not available or accessible, I think we should have an open discussion on which races/trips we should allocate our money toward. An obvious choice is Soma. Others are the BlueWater Triathlon, Powell3 Triathlon (which has an oly and sprint), and others...? There are some at Lake Mead in the fall as well.

Just my thoughts...
