Letters from Alumni

Larry Kincaid 1994-1995

Since leaving UA after being a Tricat for 1994 and part of 1995, I moved to Albuquerque and took a job with Sandia National Laboratories as a programmer/analyst. Hard to believe I've been here five years already. I'm now married (3 years) and we have two dogs, three cats (no kids...yet) and we're happily owned by a house, the upkeep of which takes almost all of my spare time. Almost, that is. I still train 9-12 hours per week and compete in five or six sprint and international distance races per year. Cycling continues to be my strength and I started swimming with a masters group a few years ago, so I've really improved there. Unfortunately I still seem to be hauling a piano around the run course. Nevertheless, I'm generally happy with my race if I finish without getting a flat tire (Ever try to ride a flat tubular back to the transition area? It really slows you down).

I couldn't let Wade and Lisa get all the attention, by the way, who ever did win the final frozen yogurt? Being a TriCat since almost its inception allowed me to experience many changes within the organization, from a small group of young elites striving to turn pro, to a club of over 50 members of all abilities who share the same passion for this great sport. Through the club, its members, and the shared experiences I have gained more than any university course could offer. In the seasons since UofA I have raced a few tris, 10Ks, and the like. I have also crewed for cyclists in Race Across AMerica (RAAM) three times. On one of those occasions I ran into TriCat alumni Susan Schema in a Savannah Georgia hotel. I have also been crew chief and race official for Furnace Creek 508 which was won this past October by another UofA alumni Justin Peschka. Currently I live in Redondo Beach, California and work as an Ergonomics and Safety consultant on several Department of Defense projects. May of 2000 should find me walking down the graduate aisle with a master's degree from California State University, Northridge. In my spare time I teach spin classes, bike to work, swim on my lunch break, and try to fit in runs when I can (never really liked that part anyway).

Wade Grow 1995-1997

I'm currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. I teach two courses, Neuroanatomy and Gross Anatomy. Both are for Occupational Therapy students. I was at the University of Arizona as a member of the Tricats for three great years. I currently have on my car a Michigan license plate which reads "TRICAT". I still race in my Tricat speedo at some races. I was a member of Team USA in 1998, competing in the 35-39 age group at the World Triathlon Championship in Lausanne, Switzerland in August, 1998. In 1999, I placed 9th in the 35-39 age group at the National Duathlon Championship in Massachusetts in June, and I placed 6th in the 35-39 age group at the National Long Course Triathlon Championship in Muncie in July. At Ironman USA in August I suffered and eventually was forced to DNF. However, I rebounded at the National Short Course Triathlon Championship in St. Joseph, Missouri, in September, placing 16th in the 35-39 age group, and qualifying for Team USA 2000. I'll race in the World Triathlon Championship in Perth, Australia in April 2000. Go Tricats!

As for a bio, my life isn't very exciting right now but I will tell you all about it so Wade isn't the only link. I am in my 2nd year at Washington University (St. Louis, MO) getting my masters in Physical Therapy. I will graduate in Dec 2000. This program doesn't leave the same kind of time to work out. We are in class 40 hours a week. So, of all things, I have now become a runner. Believe it or not, I barely swim any more. I have been training for the Chicago Marathon which is in less than 2 weeks (Oct 24). I did the MS 150 for a little break. It was a bit different riding through amish country in the middle of nowhere, missouri. I have never passed a horse and buggy on my bike before. That is really about it. I love PT school but will be heading back West ASAP. This Midwest thing isn't for me. I will hopefully have luck finding a job out of school maybe in pediatric physical therapy. We'll see. As far as race results, I haven't done a triathlon in over a year.

Ivan Salgado 1990 - 1995 (5 1/2 year plan) (Offices held: Rock with Lips, Wheel Sucker, DNF Coordinator, Town Drunk, Vice-Village Idiot)

Hey folks, I'm in the Army and still alive (Hard to believe). I just returned to the United States from a 4-year "Hardship Tour" at Ft. Benning, Georgia, 2 hours south of Atlanta, and 4 hours south of where they filmed "Deliverance". Now, I'm at Schofield Barracks in Wahiawa, Hawaii. I will be here for the next three years, so if y'all are ever in the neighborhood..let me know. I still train for, and compete in triathlons... although it is getting harder to place in my age group (too hard). One good thing about being in the military is that they pay you to work-out every day, so you can say that I am a professional athlete (hey- I do get paid to work-out) I also had the opportunity to go to an extensive diet program where I was able to lose close to 20 lbs (I kinda lost some muscle tissue in the process). But now, I have sympathetic weight gain from my wife's pregnancy. Being a Tricat- Tucson Chapta, allowed me to trade important notes on competing and training. Like how to shave my legs and back- THANKS COACH GABE... Also, how to treat that triathelete's foot- THANKS SCHEFF... Not to mention, which Cold Stone Creamery Ice cream to get... THANKS ENGLAND, HENDRICKS, and LARRYNATOR...Finally, how to pick up chicks... THANKS AARON. Actually, the best part is the people, because they are as crazy as you. My wife Lynn and I are very happy to be here on the island. We have a beautiful 2 1/2 year-old daughter in her "Wonderful Twos". We also have a baby boy on the way (Due on 20 NOV). I look forward in hearing from tri-cats comming to the island. Keep training and have fun. Aloha
