Running Shoes

Get a good pair of shoes if you haven’t in a while. Running shoes will only last 4-6 months under normal use, and less than that if you’re running a lot. After that, the midsole (cushy stuff) breaks down causing knee and/or hip pain that could go into your back or ankles. If you suddenly begin to have knee pain, check your shoes. If you see wrinkles on the midsole, replace them.

Not all running shoes are the same. There are shoes made for heavy runners, runners who have ankle pronation, those who run on their toes, etc. Go to a reputable running shoes store (like TriCats sponsors Trisports.com and Performance Footwear) and have a fit expert assess your running stride and form. They will set you up with a shoe that is right for you.

Good running socks are important as well. CoolMax or Lycra or some other moisture-wicking material is key to avoid blisters or hot spots. Blister Shield is a good product if you tend to blister as well. Avoid running in your cotton socks. The $5 for a good pair of socks is well worth it.

Likewise, a good “technical” fabric for shorts and running shirts will make your running experience that much better.
